Nintendo has addressed compatibility concerns regarding its newly released GameCube controller, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it with modern Nintendo Switch 2 games. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month. Initially, the fine print indicated that the controller was exclusively compatible with Nintendo GameCube games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, and not with other Switch 2 titles.

In a recent statement, Nintendo clarified that while the GameCube controller is primarily designed for use with GameCube games, it might be possible to use it with other Nintendo Switch 2 games. However, users should be aware of potential issues due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on more modern controllers.

Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is only compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life. "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
