Steam Player Count Rises Following Patch 8 Launch

Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) has finally deployed its long-awaited final patch, concluding the historic journey of the RPG. Larian Studios released BG3's Patch 8 on April 15, 2025, marking the last major content update for the title. The finality of this release sparked a significant resurgence in players, propelling the game just outside Steam's top 10 most-played list. Prior to the patch, concurrent player numbers hovered around 60,000, but have since surged to over 169,000 as of this writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke noted the sudden influx of players in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on April 22. He highlighted that the game's robust modding support allows the studio to direct its focus toward its "next big thing." Previous reports confirmed Larian Studios is moving on from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe to develop an entirely new project.

Consequently, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast (a subsidiary of Hasbro), will continue the Baldur's Gate franchise without Larian's involvement. They are reportedly in discussions with other potential development partners for a possible Baldur's Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More Features!

Development of this concluding patch has been underway since its initial announcement in a Steam blog post back in November 2024. The substantial update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and numerous other additions. The developers have published a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on the official BG3 website. Compared to the initial November announcement, these final notes include an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring the game is polished to the developers' satisfaction.

Larian Studios has demonstrated a significant commitment to refining BG3, as seen in the vast number of fixes and enhancements delivered in this final version. The studio has clarified that while this is the last major patch, they remain dedicated to supporting the modding community.
