The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative overhaul. Several key producers, including showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have departed the project. Despite this shake-up, the series is not canceled.
God of War TV Series: A Creative Reboot
Reports indicate that multiple scripts had already been completed, yet Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision. The project will be rebooted with a new showrunner and production team.
Key figures remaining attached include Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director) as executive producer, alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). The search is now on for a new creative leadership team to guide the series’ future.
Continued Development Despite Setbacks
Announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, the Amazon and Sony collaboration followed the success of the 2018 God of War game reboot. This project reflects Sony's broader strategy of adapting its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy spearheaded by PlayStation Productions (established in 2019). Other notable adaptations include the Horizon Zero Dawn series (Netflix), the Uncharted film (2022), the successful The Last of Us series (Season 2 slated for 2025), the Gran Turismo film (2023), and the Twisted Metal series (2023). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025).
