The beloved sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle" is officially making a comeback with nearly the entire original cast—except for Dewey, the fan-favorite youngest brother. While Erik Per Sullivan, who originally portrayed Dewey, won't be returning, newcomer Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will step into the role for the revival series.
Bryan Cranston, who played the family's hilarious patriarch, shared the update during an appearance on the "Fly on the Wall" podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade. "I reached out to Erik and said, 'Great news—the show's coming back!'" Cranston recalled. "He was thrilled but immediately declined, saying, 'That's amazing! But count me out—I'm not interested in returning.'"

Now 33, Sullivan has an impressive reason for passing on the revival: he's currently pursuing a master's degree at Harvard. "He told me, 'Acting hasn't been part of my life since childhood—I'm fully focused on academia now,'" Cranston explained during the podcast.
After the show concluded in 2006, Sullivan left acting entirely by age 19 to explore other passions—which clearly led him to academic excellence rather than Hollywood. The reboot will feature Cranston alongside Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Masterson.
Filming recently wrapped, and while Disney+ hasn't announced a premiere date yet, fans can expect four fresh half-hour episodes in the near future.
