NetEase Games' recent layoff of US-based developers working on the successful Marvel Rivals has sent shockwaves through the industry. NetEase's Strategic Shift Impacts North American Studios
Marvel Rivals Director and US Devs Laid Off

Thaddeus Sasser, director of Marvel Rivals, announced on LinkedIn on February 19, 2025, that he and other California-based developers had been laid off by NetEase Games. His post highlighted the irony of the layoffs following the successful launch of a new franchise. Undeterred, Sasser has taken the initiative to help his former colleagues find new employment opportunities, actively endorsing their skills and experience on LinkedIn. He specifically highlighted Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, praising his skills and recommending him highly to potential employers.

This proactive approach underscores the industry's current climate and the challenges faced by developers.
NetEase's Controversial North American Decisions

Marvel Rivals was developed collaboratively by teams in China and Seattle. While Sasser's team played a crucial role in game and level design, their contribution didn't shield them from the layoffs. NetEase has offered no official explanation for the job cuts. However, industry speculation points towards a broader withdrawal from the North American market. This is supported by previous events, including the withdrawal of financial backing from Worlds Untold in November 2024 and the termination of the partnership with Jar of Sparks in January 2025.
Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update: Second Half
New Heroes, Maps, and Balance Adjustments

Despite the turmoil behind the scenes, Marvel Rivals continues to receive updates. The second half of Season 1, as announced on the game's YouTube channel on February 19, 2025, introduces new heroes (The Thing and Human Torch, completing the Fantastic Four), a new map (Central Park, featuring Dracula's castle), and balance adjustments.

Lead combat designer Zhiyong detailed changes aimed at rebalancing the competitive landscape. These include adjustments to energy costs for characters with quick ultimate recharges and modifications to Vanguard character survivability and movement. Overpowered heroes like Storm and Moon Knight are also receiving nerfs. Notably, a planned rank reset was scrapped following negative player feedback.

The update highlights the ongoing development efforts, even amidst the recent controversies surrounding NetEase's restructuring.
