MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

Warner Bros. Games has announced the upcoming closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.

Season 5: The Final Chapter

The final season, commencing February 4, 2025, will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). All Season 5 content will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The reasons for the shutdown remain unannounced.

A silver lining for fans: an offline mode will be available. Players who download the latest version of MultiVersus between February 4th and May 30th can access local gameplay, either solo against AI or with up to three friends. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions have ceased as of January 31st, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium can be used until the end of Season 5.

A Brief History and Challenges

Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play title, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity with its unique 2v2 team-based combat. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, but persistent technical issues, frequent disconnections, and player concerns regarding microtransactions ultimately impacted the game's longevity. Reportedly, player counts significantly dropped in July 2024.

At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. The game remains downloadable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
