Netflix is developing a live-action series based on Dungeons & Dragons, according to a new report.
Deadline revealed that a project set in The Forgotten Realms is being spearheaded by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), and Hasbro.
The Forgotten Realms is the primary fantasy setting for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, serving as the backdrop for the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Larian Studios' acclaimed video game, Baldur's Gate 3.
Deadline described this potential D&D series as "one of Netflix's most significant television commitments in the fantasy genre to date." Reportedly, Crevello has written the pilot episode and will serve as showrunner, though Netflix and Hasbro have not officially commented.
"Following extensive negotiations, which is typical for a high-profile intellectual property, the fantasy series is now moving forward at the streamer for further development," reported Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "If successful, it could potentially launch an entire D&D universe."
Although this live-action Dungeons & Dragons series appears to have strong development momentum, there is no official update regarding a sequel to the fan-favorite film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which underperformed commercially for Paramount Pictures.
In November 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine expressed his desire to reprise his role for a sequel, stating he felt "fairly confident" it would proceed, but no further announcements have been made.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins indicated a willingness to produce another Dungeons & Dragons movie provided the production budget is significantly reduced. "We need to find a way to make it for less money," he stated.
In related news, Amazon's Secret Level anthology series previously featured an animated Dungeons & Dragons segment.
