Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera delivers only 480p resolution—significantly lower than the 1080p quality of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera.
The UK My Nintendo Store has verified the specifications for both models:

Officially licensed by Nintendo, Hori's Piranha Plant camera costs less than Nintendo's $49.99 model. It's worth noting that the Switch 2 supports both Nintendo's official accessory and any compatible USB-C camera. Both devices are scheduled for launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.
The Piranha Plant camera offers unique flexibility—its detachable webcam unit can be mounted directly atop the Switch 2, providing portability absent in Nintendo's design. Users can also conceal the lens by closing the plant's mouth.

The 480p specification surprised Nintendo fans. Reddit user Ramen536Pie questioned: "Who manufactures 480p cameras in 2025? That seems more challenging than producing 1080p."
"This is comedy gold," commented LizardsoftheGhost. "Maybe this product was intended for the Wii U era."
Pokemonfitness1420 added: "Isn't 480p practically obsolete now?"
Last week's Nintendo Direct unveiled Switch 2's GameChat—activated via the new Joy-Con's C button—enabling cross-game video communication when paired with a camera. The integrated microphone delivers consistent performance across various gaming environments, positioning this feature as Nintendo's most ambitious online multiplayer innovation in years.
