The iconic Rambo franchise is making a comeback with a prequel helmed by Jalmari Helander, director of Sisu and Big Game. Per Deadline, Millennium Media is unveiling the project titled John Rambo at this year's Cannes Film Market.
The Cannes Market operates alongside the prestigious film festival, serving as a platform for filmmakers to showcase upcoming projects seeking financing or distribution deals. Millennium Media, the studio behind blockbuster franchises like The Expendables and Has Fallen, previously produced both 2008's Rambo and its 2019 sequel Last Blood.
While plot details remain scarce, the prequel will delve into Rambo's Vietnam War origins preceding the events of 1982's First Blood. Casting hasn't been finalized yet. According to Deadline, Sylvester Stallone - who originated the role - is aware of the project but currently isn't attached.
The script comes from writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian, Black Adam), with principal photography slated to commence in Thailand this October.
Though a Rambo prequel seems unexpected, Helander's credentials speak volumes - his brutal 2023 WWII actioner Sisu (essentially transforming John Wick into a silver-haired Finnish war hero hunting Nazis during the Lapland War) proves he's more than capable of handling the material.
