The story of the new installment in the Borderlands series kicked off with a tweet from a fan expressing skepticism. The fan pointed out that the upcoming game visually mirrors Borderlands 3 too closely and might struggle with a potentially reduced marketing budget. They also likened it to the ill-fated Borderlands 2024 movie, which faced harsh criticism from both audiences and critics, including the notorious Uwe Boll. Rather than fostering a dialogue with the community, Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, initially stated his intent to block the user to avoid "negativity" and the stress it brings. Later, he reconsidered and opted to mute notifications from that account instead.
The situation intensified when popular streamer Gothalion encouraged the developer to embrace criticism and respect the views of long-time fans. In response, Randy dismissed the feedback as "toxic pessimism" and stressed that developers are "killing themselves to entertain players," suggesting the immense pressure they face.
This sparked a range of reactions within the community. Some rallied behind Pitchford, acknowledging the intense pressure on game developers. Others felt his response was an evasion of constructive dialogue, labeling it as overly emotional. Many recalled that this wasn't the first instance of Pitchford making contentious remarks on social media.
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
