The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an outstanding choice for both your gaming PC and PlayStation 5 console. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5, with impressive sequential speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s read and 6,300 MB/s write. Although it's not as fast as the 990 Pro, the main difference is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive. For PS5 performance, this makes no difference, and for gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate, utilizing a negligible amount of your system's RAM. Gamers won't notice any performance difference between the two.
It's worth noting that the Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a preinstalled heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This means it should work perfectly in a PS5 without thermal throttling, though adding a heatsink for peace of mind would only cost an extra $7 and has no downsides.
