In television, nothing beloved stays buried forever — evidenced this year by revivals ranging from The Office to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with the cherished 2000s medical comedy Scrubs now joining the revival wave.
Twenty-four years have passed since Zach Braff first portrayed insecure intern JD at Sacred Heart Hospital. The actor has now officially signed on to return for ABC's upcoming Scrubs reboot, which will blend fresh faces with series veterans.
This approach feels familiar because ABC previously attempted it during Scrubs' poorly received ninth season, which saw Braff and original cast members transitioning the show to a new generation of doctors. Viewer rejection led to cancellation after just nine episodes.

After nearly twenty years, ABC is giving the concept another shot under original creator Bill Lawrence's supervision. The new version is being positioned as a hybrid reboot-revival series.
With Braff officially onboard, Entertainment Weekly indicates other original cast members will likely follow.
"We've discussed this extensively, and the only valid reasons to revisit Scrubs are twofold," Lawrence told Deadline earlier.
"First, audiences want to check in on beloved characters navigating modern medicine — crucial for any successful reboot. Second, the show's magic always came from witnessing idealistic young doctors facing medical realities."
The original Scrubs ran for 182 episodes from 2001-2010. Production timelines for the revival remain unannounced.
