Sonic 3 Surpasses All But Super Mario in North America's Video Game Movie Earnings

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another significant milestone, securing its position as the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation in North America. The film, featuring Keanu Reeves as the iconic Shadow the Hedgehog, has now amassed over $204 million domestically following a successful fourth weekend that brought in $11 million from 3,582 theaters. Globally, the movie has earned an impressive $384.8 million.

Surpassing its predecessor, Sonic 2, in the domestic box office, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has set a high bar. However, it still trails far behind the record-breaking The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed a staggering $574,934,330 in North America and a global total of $1,359,146,628. These figures suggest a benchmark that might be hard to surpass, though upcoming projects like the Minecraft movie and the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie could potentially come close.

Despite not reaching the top spot, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 remains a resounding success for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4. For context, other successful video game adaptations include 2022's Uncharted, which earned $148,648,820 domestically, and the original Sonic movie, which brought in $146,066,470, ranking fourth and fifth respectively.
