Open Drive is a mobile racing game that offers much more than typical gameplay, currently available in early access on Android. It was developed by SpecialEffect, a charitable organization dedicated to helping players with physical disabilities enjoy video games, in collaboration with Sun & Moon Studios.
What Is Open Drive About?
This game is designed to be flexible and adapt to your preferred playstyle. It supports touch controls, keyboard and mouse, switch access, and various controllers, built from the start to be fully inclusive.
Players who use alternative input methods, such as eye-gaze technology, can also experience this open-world driving game on mobile. A standout feature is the mobile-specific eye control, allowing you to steer simply by looking left or right with a compatible eye-tracking camera.
This represents a major advancement in accessibility, particularly for players with physical limitations who often cannot use games reliant solely on touch or gamepad inputs. The eye-control feature is available across all four of the game's open-world environments: Stunt, Speed, Snow, and Meadow.
The gameplay is highly adaptable. You can relax and explore, collecting orbs, or go for high scores by performing impressive jumps using vehicles like the Roadster, Trickster, or Speedster. You also have the freedom to adjust the driving speed to your liking. Check out the early access announcement trailers for Open Drive below.
Open Drive Is Now Available in Early Access
The game automatically detects your chosen control method and adjusts the interface accordingly. It offers full support for Switch Access on Android.
Each control scheme in Open Drive is individually configurable. For touch, you can select between 'Precise' and 'Classic' modes, which let you steer via taps or directional swipes.
Similarly, there are customized setups for Switch Access, mouse, keyboard, and Android-compatible gamepads or controllers.
Open Drive is now in early access on Android, though the eye-control feature may not be fully implemented yet. Once the complete version launches later this summer, it will be free to play. For now, you can try it out on the Google Play Store if you're interested.
