Switch 2 Price Overshadows Reveal

Author : Logan Update:May 13,2025

The excitement surrounding the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 was palpable, with new graphical capabilities that promise to elevate gaming experiences. However, the absence of a new 3D Mario game, eight years post-Super Mario Odyssey, left many fans yearning. Yet, the lineup included exciting titles like the open-world Mario Kart World, the much-anticipated return of Donkey Kong with Donkey Kong Bananza, and The Duskbloods, a game drawing comparisons to Bloodborne. Amidst this excitement, the price of the Switch 2 and its associated costs have sparked significant debate.

At $449.99, the console's price might not be the shock, but the cost of games and accessories needed to fully enjoy the Switch 2 has raised eyebrows. The headline-grabbing $80 price tag for Mario Kart World, a significant jump from the usual $60-$70 range, has been a focal point of criticism. This, coupled with the additional cost of joy-con controllers for multiplayer and a Nintendo Online membership for global connectivity, paints a picture of a potentially expensive entry into the Switch 2 ecosystem.

On the flip side, the value of Mario Kart World could be argued when considering the hours of enjoyment it's likely to provide. If it follows the pattern of Mario Kart 8, which dominated for a decade, the $80 investment might seem reasonable. In a time when free-to-play games like Fortnite set different expectations for value, comparing a one-time purchase like Mario Kart to ongoing expenditures on battle passes and skins might shift perspectives. Furthermore, when a family cinema outing can quickly reach $80, the long-term entertainment value of a game like Mario Kart could be seen as a worthwhile investment.

Nintendo's pricing strategy becomes more perplexing when looking at other titles. Donkey Kong Bananza is priced at a more palatable $69.99, yet the $80 price point is also applied to Switch 2 versions of Kirby and the Forgotten Land and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This raises concerns about setting a new, higher standard for game prices, potentially influencing other publishers like those behind GTA 6.

The cost of upgrading older games to the Switch 2's capabilities remains uncertain. PlayStation's model of charging $10 for enhanced versions of PS4 games transitioning to PS5 might be a benchmark. However, if Nintendo opts for a $20 or $30 upgrade fee, it could deter many from investing in these enhancements.

For instance, Tears of the Kingdom is currently available on Amazon for $52, significantly less than the $80 Switch 2 edition. If the upgrade costs just $10, buying the original and then upgrading could save nearly $20. The situation in the UK is even more pronounced, with the Switch version at £45 and the Switch 2 at £75. The possibility of accessing enhanced versions through a Nintendo Online + Expansion Pack membership adds another layer of complexity, particularly regarding what happens if one cancels their subscription.

The decision to charge for the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, a virtual exhibition filled with minigames, has also been met with confusion. Unlike Astro's Playroom, which came free with the PlayStation 5 and was a celebrated introduction to the console, the Switch 2's Welcome Tour feels like a missed opportunity for a welcoming, inclusive launch experience.

Despite these concerns, the Switch 2 is unlikely to be a step backward for Nintendo. With the momentum from the original Switch and its extensive library, the new console seems poised for success. The revealed games look promising, and with more announcements expected (especially regarding a new Mario game), the future looks bright. However, Nintendo must heed the backlash regarding its pricing strategy to avoid setting a precedent that could negatively impact the gaming industry.

While the cost of the Switch 2 and its ecosystem doesn't completely overshadow the reveal, it certainly tempers the excitement. Nintendo's challenge will be to balance innovation with affordability to ensure the Switch 2 is a universal success.
