Wind Waker HD Switch 2 Port is Still

Are you excited about the prospect of revisiting the vibrant seas of Wind Waker on the Nintendo Switch 2? The announcement during the Nintendo Direct on April 2 has sparked a lot of interest, especially since the GameCube version of Wind Waker is set to sail onto the new console. But what about the beloved Wind Waker HD? Let's dive into what Nintendo has to say about this and explore the enhancements that Wind Waker HD brought to the original game.

The news that Wind Waker's GameCube edition is making its way to the Switch 2 has left fans buzzing with excitement. Yet, this announcement also raised questions about the fate of Wind Waker HD on the new console.

Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, provided some clarity on this matter. During a Switch 2 press event in New York, Bihldorff spoke with Kinda Funny Games Daily host Tim Gettys. When asked if the availability of Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) would prevent the Wii U's HD version from coming to the Switch 2, Bihldorff was quick to reassure fans. Gettys reported, "I did ask if having The Wind Waker on NSO precludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say 'no, all options are on the table'. Obviously, nothing is confirmed one way or another."

First Released in 2002

Let's take a moment to appreciate the journey of Wind Waker. Initially released on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, it enchanted players with its unique cel-shaded graphics and engaging gameplay. Fast forward to 2013, and Wind Waker HD graced the Wii U, bringing with it a host of improvements. These enhancements included a leap from 480p to stunning HD visuals, better lighting, the introduction of gyro controls for more immersive weapon handling, faster sailing mechanics, and various other gameplay adjustments.

With the GameCube library becoming exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this enhanced version of the game.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is rebranding its Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries to "Nintendo Classics." According to the company, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games coming in the future." Additionally, some games will feature in-game options like a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.

So, whether you're a fan of the original GameCube version or eagerly awaiting the possibility of Wind Waker HD on the Switch 2, it's clear that Nintendo is keeping all doors open. Stay tuned for more updates as we sail closer to the release of the Switch 2!
