The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads revealed key information. The sequel is confirmed as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.
Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative connection to the original game. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at Amaterasu's return, with Hirabayashi subsequently confirming her presence in the TGA trailer.
While not surprising to fans, the sequel's development addresses prior speculation regarding the Nintendo DS title, Ōkamiden. This prequel, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the existing fanbase and the varied reception of Ōkamiden, emphasizing that the new sequel directly follows the events of the original Ōkami.
The original Ōkami's ending, featuring Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, naturally lends itself to a sequel. This new adventure promises fresh challenges for both Amaterasu and the other protagonists.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by excitement. Further updates, according to Hirabayashi, will be some time coming.
