Kojima Fans Notice Echo of Metal Gear in Death Stranding 2 Art

Author : Blake Update:Apr 11,2025

The gaming community buzzed with excitement over the weekend as Hideo Kojima unveiled a new trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, along with a release date, a collector's edition, and box art. Amidst the fervor, eagle-eyed fans spotted an intriguing nod to Kojima's past masterpiece, Metal Gear Solid 2. The box art for Death Stranding 2 features Sam "Porter" Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, cradling the child "Lou," a familiar figure from the first game. This image drew comparisons to a Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty slipcase, where Japanese singer Gackt is depicted in a similar pose with a child.

Reddit user ReverseTheFlash highlighted this connection with the post titled "He did it again," sparking discussions across the fanbase. While the compositions aren't identical, the similarities are striking and serve as a delightful Easter egg for fans. These parallels also remind us of the curious promotional tactics used for Metal Gear Solid 2, where Gackt played a prominent role in various promotional materials, including unique slip-covers in certain regions.

The involvement of Gackt in Metal Gear Solid 2's marketing campaign has always intrigued fans. In 2013, Kojima himself explained the choice, stating, "The reason I asked Gackt to be on MGS2's TVCM is 'MGS1' was about DNA & 'MGS2' MEME. DNA consists 'AGTC', adding 'K' of KOJIMA becomes 'GACKT.'" This clever play on words showcases Kojima's penchant for intricate storytelling and thematic connections.

With the new trailer of Death Stranding 2 echoing some of the iconic elements from Metal Gear Solid, it's no wonder fans are drawing these connections. While I believe these similarities might reflect recurring themes in Kojima's work, it's always fun to engage in speculation and nostalgia. Reflecting on promotional artifacts like Gackt's slipcase brings a smile to many fans' faces.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5, promising another thrilling journey into Kojima's imaginative world.
