Blockbuster Debut for Block-Building Adventure
The Minecraft Movie has built its way to box office history, toppling The Super Mario Bros. Movie's record to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation opening weekend ever in North America.
Featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black (who also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie), this Xbox-inspired adventure blasted past projections with a staggering $157 million domestic haul. For comparison, last year's animated Mario film - still the highest-earning game adaptation overall - opened with $146 million.
Internationally, the block-building phenomenon stacked up another $144 million, bringing its worldwide opening total to an impressive $301 million. With production costs reportedly around $150 million before marketing, Warner Bros. might already be seeing profits from this cinematic craft.
From Pixels to Profits
The film brings Mojang's record-breaking sandbox game to life - the same title that's sold more copies than any other game in history. Microsoft's beloved creation remains wildly popular worldwide, even releasing special movie-themed DLC to celebrate the film's launch.
IGN's review scored it 6/10, praising Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess for crafting "a surprisingly sharp and humorous take on Minecraft's child-friendly adventure, particularly during its more restrained opening acts."
For fans who've experienced the movie, IGN offers exclusive insights breaking down the ending and post-credits scenes with director Jared Hess and Mojang's Torfi Frans Ólafsson.
Meanwhile at the Box Office...
Disney's live-action Snow White faces an uphill battle after a lukewarm premiere. Currently sitting at $168.4 million globally ($77.5 million domestically), its reported $250 million budget makes a miraculous recovery à la Mufasa: The Lion King seem increasingly unlikely.
