Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has unveiled a new trailer for their highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is inching closer to its release date. Amidst the excitement, the studio took a nostalgic pause to celebrate one of their landmark achievements: the wartime survival game This War of Mine, which garnered them international acclaim over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing ambiance, The Alters introduces a more vibrant and frequently humorous storyline, focusing on the trials faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the stark contrast in tone, the developers highlight a deep-seated connection between the two games.
Although the settings and atmospheres of the games differ significantly, both are anchored in the theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the grim realities of war within a besieged city, meticulously managing resources and facing daily challenges to keep their group alive. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a frantic race against time, where players must continuously relocate their mobile base to escape the destructive path of an unforgiving sun that reduces everything to dust.
Both titles challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into hostile territories in pursuit of scarce resources. The primary distinction between the games lies in their protagonists: This War of Mine involves guiding a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of alternate versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass right from launch day, offering players immediate access to this innovative survival experience.
