The GeForce RTX 4090, though a generation older than the new Blackwell 50 series GPUs, remains one of the most powerful graphics cards available, surpassing the performance of the GeForce RTX 5080, RTX 4080 Super, Radeon RX 9070 XT, and RX 7900 XTX. The only GPU that outshines it is the RTX 5090, which is notoriously difficult to find at its suggested retail price, often being marked up by hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
With the RTX 4090 now discontinued, obtaining one has become more challenging. However, Dell offers two prebuilt gaming PC options that include this powerhouse GPU at competitive prices. The Alienware Aurora R16, starting at $2,999.99, and the Dell Tower Plus, starting at $2,849.99, are the most affordable options currently available for an RTX 4090-equipped system. Notably, other manufacturers such as Lenovo and HP have ceased offering RTX 4090 prebuilt gaming PCs.
Alienware Aurora R16 RTX 4090 Gaming PC
Alienware Aurora R16 Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 4090 Gaming PC
Priced at $2,999.99 at Alienware, this Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC comes equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The processor can be upgraded to an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, but for gaming-centric users, the standard Intel Core Ultra 7 265F is more than sufficient. This CPU boasts a max turbo frequency of 5.3GHz and 20 cores, complemented by a robust 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler. The system is powered by a reliable 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
Dell Tower Plus RTX 4090 Gaming PC
New Dell Tower Plus Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 4090 Gaming PC
Available for $2,849.99 at Dell after a 10% discount from its original price of $3,149.99, the Dell Tower Plus gaming PC features similar specifications: an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. For an additional $100, upgrading to the Intel Core Ultra 7 285K is recommended, as it not only offers superior performance but also upgrades the cooling to "advanced air cooling," featuring a more robust tower heatsink fan rated for 125W TDP. The system is powered by a 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
How does the RTX 4090 stack up against current cards?
The RTX 4090 stands as the top-performing GPU in the RTX 40 series. When compared to the new Blackwell cards, only the RTX 5090, with its $2,000 MSRP, surpasses it in performance. This card excels in running every game at 4K resolution, easily achieving 60+ fps with all settings maxed out and ray tracing enabled, especially with DLSS support. The only challenge the RTX 4090 faces, along with all other GPUs, is path tracing, which is typically used for benchmark tests or to impress on social media. While the RTX 5090 may be faster, the RTX 4090's performance is more than adequate for most gaming needs.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU Review by Chris Coke
"The RTX 4090 is a behemoth, both in size and price, yet its performance is unmatched. It's the only card of its new generation currently available, making comparisons limited to older models. However, with its impressive hardware specs and DLSS 3 AI technology, the $1,599 price tag seems justified for the exceptional frame rates it delivers."
Alternative: Alienware RTX 5080 Gaming PC for $2,500
Alienware Aurora R16 Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 5080 Gaming PC
Dell offers an Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC with the new GeForce RTX 5080 GPU for $2,499.99 shipped. In our Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 FE review, Jackie notes, "For those with recent high-end graphics cards, the RTX 5080 might not justify an upgrade due to its marginal performance lead over the RTX 4080. However, if you're upgrading from an older GPU and seeking a substantial performance boost, the RTX 5080 delivers, particularly with Nvidia's AI enhancements."
