The Dungeons & Dragons franchise has been steadily expanding into video games, and its next step is Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons — a new open-world, single-player action-adventure centered on mastering dark magic to confront terrifying foes.
Just unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is the latest project from Invoke Studios, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. Set in the rich lore of the D&D universe, Warlock follows the journey of Kaatri, a warrior who embraces powerful, otherworldly magic to fight back against invading forces.
“Warlock is a third-person action-adventure built around immersive, expressive magic — where spellcraft is your tool for solving puzzles and defeating monsters, all through your own creative approach across every aspect of the game,” said Jeff Hattem, Creative Lead at Invoke Studios.
Before the official reveal, we got an early glimpse of Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons and learned how the developers are crafting its vision of “immersive, expressive magic” in third-person combat and open-world exploration. The CG trailer showcases a range of adversaries, including undead warriors and a terrifying Beholder — a classic nightmare for longtime D&D players.
According to the team, this new action-adventure is designed to bring players into the “warlock fantasy,” with the main story deeply rooted in D&D lore and centered on Kaatri — portrayed by Tricia Helfer of Battlestar Galactica fame — as she walks the path of the warlock. As in classic D&D, warlocks forge pacts with otherworldly patrons, and the bond between Kaatri and her patron will be a central pillar of the campaign.
The developers emphasized that gameplay will prioritize player agency, letting you use Kaatri’s unique abilities and spells to overcome obstacles. While they didn’t confirm immersive-sim mechanics, they pointed to their past work on titles like Watch Dogs, Deus Ex, and Far Cry as inspiration for the kind of freedom Warlock aims to deliver.
This open-ended style mirrors the spirit of the tabletop experience — yet the team made it clear this isn’t a traditional RPG. They believe its player-driven gameplay will offer an accessible gateway for newcomers to the D&D universe.
“We’re not trying to simulate the tabletop RPG experience — there’s no dice-rolling in this game. We’re focused on delivering a true video game experience first,” said Dominic Guay, Studio Lead at Invoke Studios. “If you’ve never played Dungeons & Dragons, you won’t feel lost or left out. But if you’re a fan of the world, you’ll be thrilled by how we’re expanding its lore in Warlock.”
After only seeing the CG trailer, the developers confirmed a larger gameplay reveal is planned for later this summer in 2026. For more from The Game Awards 2025, explore our full roundup of all the announcements from the show.
