AMD unveiled its next-generation graphics cards, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, at CES 2025, yet surprisingly, these RDNA 4 graphics cards were absent from AMD's keynote. Despite this, vendors at the event showcased their new cards, albeit with obscured specifications.
David McAfee, AMD's VP & GM of Radeon Graphics and Ryzen CPUs, took to Twitter / X to announce that both cards are slated for release in March 2025. "Radeon 9000 series hardware and software are looking great and we are planning to have a wide assortment of cards available globally," McAfee stated. "Can’t wait for gamers to get their hands on the cards when they go on sale in March!"
The AMD RX 9070 and 9070 XT are thus set to hit the market in March 2025, though AMD has yet to disclose detailed specifications or pricing. It's widely speculated that these GPUs will compete directly with Nvidia's forthcoming RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti, set to launch in February, in terms of both price and performance.
Despite the lack of official details, reports suggest that stock of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT has already reached retailers and is in the possession of reviewers and critics. eTeknix confirmed receiving review samples of these upcoming graphics cards.
This situation has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation that AMD might have delayed the official launch to strategically counter Nvidia's RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti, enabling direct comparisons. There's also speculation that pricing pressure from Nvidia may have influenced AMD's decision to postpone the RX 9070 lineup's release.
With scant information available about the new AMD graphics cards, the messaging surrounding the RX 9070 lineup launch has been perceived as chaotic. A June 2024 report highlighted Nvidia's commanding 88% share of the discrete GPU market, dwarfing AMD's 12%.
In a market where no other company challenges Nvidia at the mid-range or high-end segments, AMD must strategically maneuver to erode Nvidia's overwhelming market dominance.
