Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in Dynasty Warriors, presents a formidable challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide will help you overcome this crucial stage in Chapter 2. The objective: defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by clearing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base-clearing strategy; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with the twin pike weapon.

Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate. This initiates a major battle against Dong Zhuo's forces. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he unleashes his Grand Tactic, significantly weakening the enemy defenses.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. He is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating peripheral officers to maintain morale, which Lu Bu's presence heavily depletes.

Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain him, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time limit; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, and you haven't defeated Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

After Lu Bu's departure, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Then, capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads poised to attack, and your health replenished, charge towards Dong Zhuo's forces.

Dong Zhuo will employ two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through enemy lines and eliminate the soldiers and officers guarding the catapults. Your forces will then destroy them, ending the Grand Tactic.

The second Grand Tactic requires defeating an officer. Engage the officer via the right-side stairs, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan (a defector fighting for Dong Zhuo). A duel with Diaochan is advisable to avoid being overwhelmed.

Once the second Grand Tactic is neutralized, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should easily overcome his remaining troops. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further assisting you. While a duel is tempting, a standard attack will suffice; Dong Zhuo and his remaining forces will offer minimal resistance.
