Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. According to Variety, a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy in a recurring role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar's involvement is a significant development.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series, will not be participating in this reboot.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as Buffy adding a compelling layer to the story.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and subsequent comic books.
