Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive into the details about the exciting features of Civ 7 VR and the latest updates on the broader Civ 7 release.
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a bold leap into virtual and mixed reality, exclusively launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, marking the franchise's first foray into VR gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk shared his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the synergy between Civ 7 VR and Meta's platform. With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality,
he remarked. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR offers an immersive experience where players can interact with the game world from a Command Table, allowing them to strategize as if playing a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to examine the intricate details of buildings and units or take a broader view of their empire.
The game supports both virtual and mixed reality modes, enabling players to switch seamlessly between them. In VR, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a vista tailored to their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world surroundings.
Civ 7 VR also caters to different play styles with single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can engage in strategic battles, either against AI or human opponents. During multiplayer sessions, players can see each other as their selected world leaders across the Command Table. Note that online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively addressed the feedback received during Civ 7’s early access phase. Following the Advanced Access launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder’s Edition buyers, the game garnered mixed reviews on Steam. Players highlighted issues with the User Interface, particularly in accessing crucial gameplay information.
In response, Firaxis Games has outlined plans for future updates, prioritizing UI enhancements. Their goals include making interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, and refining areas of polish such as formatting. Additionally, they plan to introduce community-requested features like team-based multiplayer, a broader selection of map types, and more.
A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crisis adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, the standard version of Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its global release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
