Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Fighting Lu Bu is a formidable challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. It took me over an hour to defeat him, showcasing his difficulty. However, there are compelling reasons to take him on. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights, a true badge of honor. Secondly, depending on your allegiance with Shu or Wei, you may be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate rewards you with the "The Strongest" trophy, and a victory in the post-game grants you the game’s final weapon, the halberd. These incentives make the challenge worthwhile.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped with gear that can withstand his onslaught. A weapon like a sword, capable of multiple hits and staggering him, is essential. Equip Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a wide range. I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell will boost your health and defense, crucial for surviving Lu Bu's powerful attacks. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary method of gaining Bravery during the fight.
In most encounters, Lu Bu starts on his horse, Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the area. He's fast but will occasionally pause to rest. Use these moments to hit him with your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks have limited AOE, except for Red Hare's jump attack, making them manageable to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more dangerous. His attacks are swift and he moves rapidly across the battlefield. When he's surrounded by a red aura, he's immune to staggering, so be cautious. He often charges in sets of three; evade these and prepare for more. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely deplete your health, but it's easily evaded.
His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow. With minimal prep time, he launches three massive arrows three times, capable of juggling and devastating your health. Use a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to cancel this from a distance; close-range arts like Palm Strike will lead to your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, granting you invincibility for crucial moments.
Lu Bu is surprisingly easy to juggle in this phase. Continuous attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react better to his moves, and remember: evade, evade, evade.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently low, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources: activate Musou attacks when he's close, deploy Battle Arts, and strike fast and hard. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your key to victory.
And that's how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! Dynasty Warriors: Origins is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
