Bungie has unveiled the exciting content roadmap for Destiny 2's upcoming year, kicking off with the much-anticipated Edge of Fate expansion, scheduled for release on July 15. The expansion was comprehensively detailed during a recent reveal event, where Bungie also shared plans for additional content and the game's future.

Bungie announced that Destiny 2 will feature two paid expansions this year, one of which will be themed around Star Wars. This announcement is part of a larger update on the game's future, including a new multi-year story arc starting in July. This change signals a departure from the traditional annual expansion model, first hinted at last September, with Bungie now planning for two medium-sized expansions annually.

Bungie's attempt to dismiss a copyright lawsuit was denied due to their inability to present key in-game content, which has been removed and placed in the Destiny Content Vault. The lawsuit, filed by writer Matthew Kelsey Martineau, alleges that Destiny 2’s Red Legion faction bears significant similarities to a faction described in his WordPress-published writings, which predate the game's release.

Bungie argued that the elements cited in the lawsuit differ meaningfully from those in Destiny 2, but the judge found the company could not sufficiently demonstrate this without access to the vaulted content. This case underscores the legal challenges posed by live-service games where story content may become inaccessible post-update.

Bungie announced that it will unveil new details about Destiny 2's next major expansion, The Edge of Fate, during a special reveal event on May 6. The event is expected to provide a comprehensive look at what players can anticipate in Year 8 of the game, following the conclusion of The Final Shape.

A judge denied Bungie’s attempt to dismiss a copyright lawsuit by referencing now-inaccessible content from Destiny 2, ruling out the studio’s proposal to rely on lengthy YouTube lore explainers as evidence. The case stems from an October 2024 claim by sci-fi author Matthew Kelsey Martineau, who alleged that Bungie lifted key ideas from a story he published under the pseudonym Caspar Cole. Both Martineau's work and Destiny 2’s original Red War campaign feature similar elements—including a faction called the “Red Legion,” flamethrowers, and war hounds.

Bungie’s defense is complicated by the fact that the campaign in question was removed from the game and placed into the Destiny Content Vault, making it unplayable. The judge declined to review the proposed 10-hour lore videos, highlighting the challenge of preserving evidence in evolving live-service games where large portions of content can be made inaccessible over time.

In the April 17 edition of This Week in Destiny, Bungie confirmed the title of its next major content drop: The Edge of Fate. A full reveal is scheduled for May 6, 2025, where the studio will unveil details about the upcoming year of Destiny 2.

In an unexpected turn, Destiny 2 players discovered that the upcoming Rite of the Nine dungeon mode—originally scheduled for Act 3—was prematurely released following the launch of Act 2. The new mode, intended to reintroduce weapons and offer a unique teaching-style experience, went live in an unintentional and clearly unfinished state.

Players quickly noticed missing features, including the lack of a launch pop-up, duplicated Xur Treasure Horde icons (with one non-functional), and the appearance of untextured, incomplete weapons. Bungie has not yet issued an official statement on the accidental early release.

Following the release of the Heresy update earlier this month, Destiny 2 players discovered a bug allowing all three Exotic Glaives—Edge of Intent, Edge of Concurrence, and Edge of Action—to be used by any class, breaking their previous Warlock, Hunter, and Titan exclusivity. The bug also affected some older class-locked swords. After reviewing the situation, Bungie announced that it will not fix the issue. Though unintentional, the developer has decided to retain the change, effectively making the expanded weapon access a permanent part of the game.

Amid ongoing speculation and leaks, NetEase Games officially announced Destiny: Rising, a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter set in an alternate timeline of the Destiny universe. The game takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth attempting to recover after “The Collapse,” offering a new narrative while maintaining familiar elements for longtime fans.

In a press release dated October 14, 2024, NetEase Senior Vice President Ethan Wang stated the company is “honored to partner with Bungie” and aims to deliver a “Destiny-caliber experience” tailored for mobile platforms.

September 16

Destiny 2 developer Bungie has pledged to credit and compensate artist Tofu Rabbit after allegations surfaced that the studio had used her artwork without permission. The illustration appeared on the NERF LMTD Destiny 2 Ace of Spades Blaster, a licensed product developed with Hasbro.

Following public criticism from the artist on Twitter (X), Bungie confirmed it had investigated the matter with its partner and is now in contact with Tofu Rabbit to ensure proper recognition and payment for the work.

August 16

A recent update to Destiny 2 has triggered a widespread issue where player account names, known as Bungie Names, were unexpectedly altered. Beginning around August 14, many users reported their names being replaced with “Guardian” followed by random numbers. According to Bungie, the issue stems from its name moderation tool, which mistakenly flagged and changed a large number of account names.
