Prepare, Guardian — Bungie has revealed the future of its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, with two thrilling expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates for both paid and free players, all under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy."
The Year of Prophecy introduces four major content updates, featuring two paid expansions and two substantial free updates accessible to all players.
Kicking off with Rite of the Nine, a reimagined dungeon experience for both veteran players and newcomers, this update is already live at no extra cost. Familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep return with fresh challenges, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and earn revamped dungeon weapons.
On July 15, the new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches as part of a multiyear saga. This paid expansion reintroduces the enigmatic Nine, with new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard Ikora taking center stage.
The expansion unfolds on the new destination, Kepler, designed with puzzle-solving, exploration, and player-driven discovery in mind, inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons. Players will encounter new enemies, weapons, gear, and unique destination-specific abilities.
Also on July 15, significant core game updates will enhance gameplay, including revamped armor and gear systems for deeper buildcrafting and a new activity selection interface called the Portal.
"The Portal lets players choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops," Bungie shared. "Fireteam Ops and Pinnacle Ops focus on fast-paced team action and extended cooperative play, while Solo Ops cater to solo players seeking short, self-contained sessions without needing a fireteam.
"Players can customize activities with 50 new modifiers for deeper gameplay variety and greater challenges, while curated activity rotations keep rewards fresh and engaging."
As with any major expansion, pre-order bonuses are available, including an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Full details are listed below:

Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi themes and elements.
This news arrives as welcome relief for Destiny 2 fans after Bungie faced challenges, including layoffs of 220 staff — 17% of its workforce — in July 2024, following 100 layoffs less than a year prior.
Bungie is also working on Marathon, revealed in May 2023 as a reboot of its classic franchise. Our IGN hands-on preview of Marathon noted: "After experiencing Marathon in its alpha state, I’m confident it will satisfy Bungie’s PvP fans who’ve been waiting for something fresh. Here’s hoping it delivers when it launches on PC and consoles in September."
