Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide
Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a challenging endgame activity drawing inspiration from the original game's Expedition League. This guide details Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the strategic use of the passive skill tree.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation
Expeditions are marked on the Atlas with a light blue spiral icon. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter.
Within the Expedition zone, locate the Markers and the tent housing four NPCs. These NPCs provide basic instructions, but mastering the mechanics requires further exploration. The core gameplay revolves around strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events:
- Runic Monsters: Detonating Explosives near Red Markers spawns these creatures. Larger Markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: These relics grant beneficial or detrimental modifiers. For instance, increased monster elemental damage might be offset by increased item rarity from Excavated Chests.
- Excavated Chests: Found near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These chests contain valuable rewards: Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.
The Explosives UI shows the area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. Runic Monsters will appear, empowered by the Remnants, initiating the event. Dying resets the map, but you can retreat and return later.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Dannig in your Hideout allows access to the Expedition Map. Slot the Logbook and click "Open Portals" to enter a significantly larger Expedition, with far more Explosives.
This Pinnacle Map features Olroth, a challenging boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and a chance at unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Accessed via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances rewards and difficulty. It features Notable nodes and nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and Olroth encounters). Defeating Olroth provides 2x skill points.
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1, but increases radius by 150%, range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% | N/A |
Disturbed Rest | 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always have 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for increased challenge and rewards. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.
Expedition Rewards
Artifacts are key rewards, each used with a specific vendor:
Reward | Use | Gear |
---|---|---|
Broken Circle Artifact | Gwennen (Weapons) | Weapons |
Black Scythe Artifact | Tujen (Belts and Jewelry) | Belts & Jewelry |
Order Artifact | Rog (Armor) | Armor |
Sun Artifact | Dannig (Used to acquire other Artifacts) | N/A |
Exotic Coinage | Refreshes vendor inventory | N/A |
Artifacts are not consumed after map completion. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories. Expedition Logbooks unlock Pinnacle Maps and the chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards.
