Fallout developers, including New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, are eager to revisit the franchise, but only under specific conditions. Their enthusiasm hinges on the opportunity to innovate and explore fresh creative avenues.
A New Chapter, But With Creative Freedom
The prospect of a new Fallout game excites several key developers, but they've made it clear that creative freedom is paramount. In a YouTube Q&A, Josh Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, provided he's granted sufficient creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of understanding project parameters and the scope of permissible creative exploration. Without the freedom to innovate, the project loses its appeal.
This sentiment echoes among other developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but only if it allows for meaningful creative contributions. Cain stressed the need for novelty, stating that his participation depends on the opportunity to explore uncharted territory within the Fallout universe. He highlighted that past projects' unique elements were the driving force behind his involvement. Simply rehashing previous successes wouldn't be motivating.
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also expressed a desire to work on another Fallout game, but as of January 2023, confirmed that no such project was underway. Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 leave little room for new projects in the immediate future. While Urquhart expressed hope for a future Fallout project before his retirement, the timing remains uncertain.
