Meta Quest 3S: Amazon's 2024 Best-Selling Console

The Meta Quest 3S achieved a remarkable feat in 2024, outperforming established gaming giants like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch to become Amazon's top-selling console. This success is particularly noteworthy given its October launch.

The Quest 3S, a more affordable version of the Meta Quest 3, offers a compelling entry point into VR gaming. Its wireless design and independence from powerful PCs or consoles contribute significantly to its appeal. While VR remains niche, the Quest 3S's price and game library proved a winning combination on Amazon.

Amazon's 2024 best-seller list places the Meta Quest 3S at the pinnacle of the video game console category. It secured the #11 spot overall, trailing only behind gift cards, Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, and a few accessories. The PlayStation 5 Slim (#17) and Nintendo Switch (#53) lagged considerably behind. Notably, Xbox consoles didn't even feature in the top 80, while the PlayStation 5 Pro was also absent. Only a Nintendo microSDXC card and the PlayStation DualSense controller ranked higher.

Increased VR Accessibility

The absence of Sony's PlayStation VR2 from Amazon's list highlights the Quest 3S's advantage. Its standalone nature, eliminating the need for external devices and offering untethered movement, likely boosted its popularity. This contrasts with the tethered PlayStation VR and the need for a powerful console or PC to run competing headsets.

Interestingly, the discontinued Meta Quest 2 also made the list (#27), while the original Meta Quest 3 did not. This suggests a strong preference for more affordable VR options. With the Meta Quest 2 now unavailable and the Nintendo Switch 2 slated for a 2025 release, the 2025 rankings will be fascinating to observe. Nintendo's potential success with the Switch 2 could significantly shift the landscape. However, 2024's results clearly show a growing interest in virtual reality.
