Konami Announces a Suikoden Game for Mobile Called Suikoden STAR LEAP

Suikoden is back! Well, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set to be free-to-play upon release. While a specific release date remains unannounced, a launch later this year is anticipated.

For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, first launched in 1995, is a collection of RPGs developed and published by Konami, the brainchild of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series (known as Suikoden in Japanese) immerses players in a world of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven entries, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a full-fledged reboot, Konami offers Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile game experience.

The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt before disaster strikes—a devastating attack on his village, altering his life forever.

Thus begins Hou's journey alongside Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional repression), Shirin (his childhood friend with a strong sense of justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler), all striving to restore peace.

However, the game's reception within the community is not universally positive. Long-time Suikoden fans, yearning for a proper continuation, express mixed feelings about STAR LEAP's gacha mechanics.
