Hasbro has exciting news for fans of Magic: The Gathering, announcing plans to bring the beloved card game to screens everywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is teaming up with Legendary Entertainment to develop a shared universe for Magic: The Gathering, encompassing both movies and TV shows. The first project to kick off this expansive universe will be a movie.
"We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," said Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production. Legendary Entertainment, known for producing blockbuster films such as Dune, the western Godzilla movies like Godzilla vs Kong, and Detective Pikachu, is set to bring this iconic game to life on the big screen.
While details are still emerging, it appears that Legendary's adaptations may not be connected to the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set for Netflix. However, it's also possible that plans have shifted, and the animated series might now be part of this larger shared universe.
Magic: The Gathering is a card game that was originally created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Since its inception, it has grown into one of the world's most popular trading card games. Wizards of the Coast became a part of Hasbro in 1999, further expanding the game's reach and influence.
Hasbro is no stranger to adapting its products for the screen, having previously produced movies based on franchises like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons. The company currently has several projects in development, including new G.I. Joe films, a new Power Rangers movie, and even a Beyblade film. This move to bring Magic: The Gathering to screens is another step in Hasbro's ongoing efforts to expand its beloved IPs into new media.
