Nexus Mods, a popular modding website, finds itself at the center of a heated controversy after removing over 500 mods for the game Marvel Rivals in a single month. The removal of two mods, specifically those replacing Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, ignited a firestorm of criticism.
TheDarkOne, the Nexus Mods owner, clarified the situation on Reddit, explaining that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. He noted, however, that this seemingly impartial action has been met with deafening silence from some YouTube commentators.
The controversy didn't stop there. TheDarkOne revealed that the removal resulted in a barrage of threats and hateful messages directed at the platform. He stated, “We're receiving death threats, being called pedophiles, and enduring all sorts of abuse simply because someone chose to escalate this issue.”
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced backlash over mod removals. A similar incident occurred in 2022 when a Spider-Man Remastered mod replacing rainbow flags with American flags was taken down. At the time, the site's administrators publicly declared their commitment to inclusivity and their policy of removing content that violates this principle.
TheDarkOne concluded by stating that Nexus Mods will not engage with those who find their moderation policies objectionable.
