The challenge of crafting new weapon types in the Monster Hunter franchise. This article explores the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Exploring the Possibility of a 15th Weapon Type
A New Weapon Remains a Possibility
With over a decade of consistent weapon options, the Monster Hunter series might benefit from a fresh weapon type. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the potential for adding a new weapon.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since the Insect Glaive's introduction in Monster Hunter 4. While Tokuda expressed interest in creating a new weapon, he noted the challenges involved in development. He explained that the team considered this during MH World and Wilds' development, stating, "It’s not off the table, it’s just that we never really decided that we wanted to for the recent titles."
Tokuda highlighted the difficulty of designing a weapon that doesn't overly overlap with existing ones. He elaborated on the extensive process of balancing and refining weapons for each game, saying, "The resources and time required...have always been better spent refining the existing lineup."
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continued to innovate, adjusting weapons for MH Wilds with features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized maintaining the core feel of each weapon.
He described the weapon balancing process, stating, "We have a concept for each weapon's feel." Tokuda added, "It's only when players use them that we see if the concept matches reality."
Balancing weapons for Wilds presented unique challenges due to Iceborne's additions. Tokuda explained, "People playing Iceborne weapons were assumed to have mastered the basics, so we added new combos and abilities."
Despite this, MH Wilds represents a fresh start, with a focus on overall gameplay feel, rather than simply retaining features from previous games.

Niantic's Senior Producer, Sakae Osumi, hinted at future collaborations, stating, "This is the beginning...we are planning to do more."
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
