Nintendo Switch 2: Unveiling the New Pocket Flagship

Author : Carter Update:Apr 13,2025

The official trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled on January 16, 2025, taking the gaming world by surprise. Without any prior announcement, the new console's form factor was showcased through videos suddenly appearing on Nintendo's YouTube channels. Although rumors about the release date had been circulating and changing, it was NateTheHate who accurately predicted that the Switch 2 would be revealed on that specific date. If you haven't yet had the chance to see it, you can watch the trailer below:

From the video, it's evident that the Nintendo Switch 2 is significantly larger than its predecessor across all dimensions. The screen, Joy-Cons, and even the control sticks have been upsized. While exact specifications remain under wraps, leaks suggest the Switch 2 will measure 116 mm in height, 270 mm in width, and 14 mm in thickness. This makes it 3.1 cm wider and 1.4 cm taller than the original Nintendo Switch. Rumors also hint at an 8-inch screen, a step up from the 7-inch display on the OLED version of the first Switch.

Design

The video presentation introduces a novel design for the Joy-Cons, which now feature a magnetic attachment system. These Joy-Cons connect to the console via two recessed contacts in the body, ensuring a secure fit in portable mode. Concerns about fragility have been addressed by insiders who claim that these contacts are well-protected by the console's frame, making it nearly impossible to detach the Joy-Cons without damaging the console. The SL and SR buttons have been enlarged and made metallic to enhance the magnetic connection, although this design choice results in bezels on the screen's sides.

The video also shows the controllers sliding to the side after pressing a button, indicating a redesigned holder that turns them into a full-fledged joystick. The grips on the top part of the holder are now flat, and the Joy-Cons are inserted from the sides, unlike the top insertion of the previous model. The buttons on the Joy-Cons have been slightly enlarged, and the sticks are rumored to use Hall effect sensors to minimize drift. However, the IR camera has been omitted from the new design, which might affect backward compatibility for games like Ring Fit Adventure.

Additionally, the top bezel of the console features a microphone and a USB Type-C port, suggesting potential uses such as direct connection to wired joysticks and voice chat in games. More details on these features are expected to be clarified soon.

What's inside?

While we eagerly await the Nintendo Direct on April 2 for the official specifications, speculation is rife about the console's internals. Rumors suggest the Switch 2 will have performance comparable to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with potential support for Quad HD resolution in docked mode. Leaked specs hint at a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and support for various microSD cards. Although an OLED screen won't be available at launch, the LCD screen is expected to be quite impressive. There's excitement about the possibility of seeing AAA titles and even Genshin Impact on the new console.
