Bethesda has officially stated that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered will not include official mod support. However, that hasn't deterred the dedicated fan community from releasing several unofficial mods on their own.
Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos surprise-launched their reimagined version of Oblivion for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, a number of community-made mods appeared on the popular website Nexus Mods. While these are mostly minor customization tweaks, they highlight the unmatched dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community.
At the time of writing, an impressive 22 mods are already listed on the site. The first mod to be released allows PC players to customize their desktop by replacing the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut icon with one of two images featuring the infamous Adoring Fan. Several mods let users skip the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Others are already tweaking gameplay, such as one that adjusts the Wizard's Fury spell and another that removes the in-game compass.
This early influx of mods comes despite Bethesda—a company that typically encourages modding—confirming that Oblivion Remastered does not offer official mod support this time. The company clarified in an FAQ on its website that players would have to look to the community for mods.
In response, Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming uploaded an Iron Longsword damage mod partly to demonstrate that Oblivion Remastered can still be modded.
"This just goes to show that modding is possible," the user wrote in the mod's description. "Bethesda says no mod support—I disagree. The game is essentially Unreal Engine layered over the original Oblivion. The data folder is buried deeper, but the underlying structure is the same."
