"OutRun: Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney's Surprise Movie Adaptation"

Author : Simon Update:May 13,2025

Get ready for a thrilling ride as Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen in a surprise movie adaptation. Universal Pictures has tapped none other than Michael Bay, the mastermind behind the Transformers series, to direct and produce the film. Joining him is the talented Sydney Sweeney, who will also take on a producer role. The screenplay will be crafted by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details remain under wraps for now, and no release date has been announced.

On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, a key figure in the Sonic movies, will serve as a producer, while Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project. OutRun, which first dazzled gamers in 1986 with its stunning graphics, was created by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. The game has seen various versions and ports over the years, with the last major release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009. Although somewhat dormant in recent times, Sega has been actively revisiting its rich back catalogue, with new titles in the works for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi.

Sega's push into adaptations of its beloved intellectual properties continues to gain momentum. The Sonic movies have achieved tremendous success, and last year saw the launch of the Like a Dragon: Yakuza series on Amazon. The appetite for video game films in Hollywood is insatiable, as evidenced by the record-breaking performances of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recently released A Minecraft Movie.

As for the style of the OutRun film, fans might be in for a Fast & Furious-style driving and action extravaganza, given Michael Bay's penchant for high-octane thrills and Sydney Sweeney's rising star power. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project.
