Overwatch 2 Summer Roadmap Revealed by Blizzard

Author : Zoey Update:May 07,2025

Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled an exciting roadmap for Overwatch 2's Stadium mode, detailing the heroes and features set to be introduced in Season 17, Season 18, Season 19, and beyond. In a comprehensive Director's Take blog post, game director Aaron Keller shared insights into the past, present, and future of this new mode, which has been available for just over a week. Alongside the roadmap, Keller discussed the mode's origins and its impressive performance so far.

PlayStadium Gets 7 New Heroes This Summer -------------------------------------

The Stadium mode will expand with the introduction of the new Damage hero, Freja, in a mid-season patch for Season 16. However, it's Season 17 in June that promises significant enhancements, adding Junkrat, Sigma, and Zenyatta to the playable roster. This update will also introduce the Esperança Push map and the Samoa Control map, enriching the strategic multiplayer experience.

Blizzard plans to further refine Stadium by implementing features such as Unranked Crossplay, new all-star rewards, custom games, additional example builds, and the ability to save and share builds. While it's unclear whether all these additions will be available at the start of Season 17 or rolled out throughout the season, the anticipation is palpable.

Season 18 will bring the iconic gorilla hero Winston to Stadium, alongside Sojourn and Brigitte. The Route 66 and London maps will join the lineup, and a new Payload Race game mode will be introduced, complete with two new maps and a Stadium trials feature. Players will also have the option to Endorse their teammates, fostering a positive community environment.

Looking ahead to Season 19 and beyond, Blizzard has confirmed the addition of "multiple new heroes," including both existing Overwatch 2 characters and new ones. A new China map is in development, alongside a Draft Mode feature, consumables, and tweaks to the item system, promising to keep the game fresh and engaging.

How has Stadium Performed so Far?

The Overwatch 2 team has shared compelling statistics that showcase Stadium's popularity. Since its launch, the mode has surpassed Quick Play and Competitive, becoming the most played mode with 2.3 million matches played over 7.8 million hours in its first week alone. This performance is more than double that of Overwatch Classic's launch week.

Notable statistics include Lucio having the highest win rate yet the lowest pick rate, and players spending a staggering 900 billion Stadium Cash on 206 million items for their builds. These figures highlight the mode's significant impact and player engagement.

In his Director's Take, Aaron Keller clarified that Stadium was in development before Overwatch 2's launch, dispelling rumors that it was created to compete with Marvel Rivals, which debuted in December 2024. Keller emphasized Blizzard's commitment to ongoing communication, promising more insights into Stadium in the following week.

Keller reaffirmed Blizzard's dedication to the core modes of Overwatch, stating that Stadium is not competing for resources but rather providing new ways to enjoy the game. He teased that Season 18 will be particularly exciting, encouraging players to enjoy Stadium and contribute to making the game great.

Stadium was introduced with the launch of Season 16 last week, as part of Blizzard's efforts to reinvigorate its player base. This initiative began with an all-encompassing Spotlight presentation in February, leading to the return of loot boxes and an improved Steam rating, with many players feeling that this is the best Overwatch experience in years.
