The Nintendo GameCube, despite being nearly 25 years old, boasts a dedicated fanbase eager to acquire its rarest iterations. Among the most sought-after are the DVD-playing Panasonic Q and numerous themed variants, such as the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red edition. However, the pinnacle of rarity might be the Space World GameCube prototype.
Initially believed lost to time, this LED-equipped prototype, unearthed in 2023 by Donny Fillerup of ConsoleVariations, has resurfaced. Key differences distinguish it from retail models: it lacks internal hardware beyond several LEDs simulating operation; the top logo is semi-transparent, revealing any inserted disc; and the vents show design variations. ConsoleVariations details over 20 distinctions from the original Japanese GameCube.
This isn't Fillerup's first venture into high-value console sales. In 2022, he auctioned a Golden Wii, once a gift from THQ to the British Royal Family, for $36,000.
Given its historical significance as a prototype, a $100,000 price tag for the Space World GameCube isn't entirely unreasonable. While the asking price is substantial, Fillerup's openness to offers suggests a potential for a lower sale price. For those with deep pockets, this rare piece of gaming history could become a prized possession.
