Roblox has introduced a new licensing platform to streamline connections between Roblox creators and intellectual property holders, including major names like Netflix, Lionsgate, and Sega.
License Manager enables "eligible creators" to access approved assets tied to popular franchises such as Squid Game, Stranger Things, Twilight, and Saw, as well as games like the Yakuza series and Like a Dragon.
"Typically, securing IP licenses for game development has been a complicated, lengthy process, often limiting access to larger studios," Roblox explained.
"Rights holders can now adopt a more customized, selective strategy—offering revenue sharing, embracing an open-source model where fans can build upon existing content, or proactively monitoring experiences for IP usage. Licenses can be granted to existing games or made available through the new Licenses catalog, where creators can explore and apply directly."
In addition to direct collaboration with creators, IP owners can also "proactively scan experiences for IP usage," suggesting future enforcement actions against unapproved fan-made games.
The company emphasizes this is just the start, with more intellectual property partners expected to join the initiative "over the coming months."
Earlier this month, Roblox invited 1,000 developers to join The Hatch, an event the block-building platform described as its largest Easter egg hunt to date. While the official event is being promoted as a milestone, thousands of players expressed their discontent by using the #BoycottTheHatch hashtag across social media, calling for safer experiences for younger audiences.
