Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was seemingly abandoned a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, only to see the project stall due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-based action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or otherwise reviving the film remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he goes undercover within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed (scoring an 8/10 on IGN), the game, despite its popularity, never received a sequel. Liu's involvement could change that, potentially bringing this beloved action story to the silver screen.
