Sony's renewed focus on family-friendly games is directly linked to the phenomenal success of Astro Bot. This article delves into Astro Bot's achievements and PlayStation's plans for its legacy IPs.
PlayStation's Family-Friendly Expansion
Astro Bot's Remarkable Sales Figures
Since its September 2024 launch, Astro Bot has surpassed expectations, selling over 1.5 million copies and earning the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024. This success has spurred PlayStation to further invest in the family gaming genre.
During Sony's Q3 2025 earnings announcement, President, CEO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki highlighted Astro Bot's four Game Awards wins (including Game of the Year and Best Family Game), alongside Helldivers 2's success. He emphasized that these wins demonstrate significant progress in expanding PlayStation's portfolio into family-friendly and live-service titles.
PlayStation's Family-Focused History
While PlayStation boasts a history of family-friendly titles, many have seen limited recent activity. As noted by The Gamer, franchises like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and Jak and Daxter have lacked new installments for over a decade. The loss of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon to Xbox further underscores this gap. Ratchet & Clank and LittleBigPlanet remain notable exceptions, along with the recent Astro Bot success.
In a December 2024 Famitsu interview, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst stressed Astro Bot's significance, praising the small team's achievement in creating a "celebration of everything PlayStation."
The Potential Revival of Legacy IPs
Astro Bot's success, featuring several dormant PlayStation IPs, has fueled speculation about their future. Hulst previously highlighted the value of PlayStation's extensive IP portfolio, suggesting a proactive approach to leveraging legacy IPs alongside new franchises.
The recent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer showcased the return of Ape Escape monkeys, hinting at a possible revival. Sly Cooper's popularity on PlayStation Plus' Classics Catalog, achieving high ratings on the PlayStation Store, further supports this possibility. While no official announcements have been made, the signs point towards a renewed focus on family-friendly legacy titles.
