Set to launch on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man marks the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond series, following the footsteps of Final Fantasy and the Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set from 2023. Notably, while it won't include preconstructed Commander decks, **the cards in the Scene Box highlighted above** are designed specifically for Commander and **will not** be Standard-legal.
Although Magic ventured into the Marvel universe with last year's Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and more, Spider-Man represents the first full set inspired by the comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall emphasizes the need for a comprehensive set to truly capture the essence of Spider-Man and his vast array of villains.
"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he's encountered over the years," McCall explains. "Including characters from the Spider-Man canon in a broader set would mean leaving out too many iconic figures. While we might have been able to include Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-specific set, there wouldn't have been space for Aunt May."
McCall highlights that creating a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike a traditional Magic set, which must establish a setting and be engaging, a Universes Beyond set can leverage the existing familiarity fans have with characters like Spider-Man. "When we craft a card that embodies the theme of great power bearing great responsibility, we can incorporate more mechanical complexity because the story resonates with players. We don’t need to keep Universes Beyond cards overly simple; we just need to choose moments that are recognizable and easy for fans to connect with."
AnswerSee ResultsHead Designer Mark Rosewater elaborates on how they translate these iconic moments and the surrounding world into a Magic set. He notes that Magic's color pie is versatile enough to depict heroism and villainy across all five colors. For instance, Spider-Man's obligation to use his powers for good aligns with the white color pie, while his origin through science and invention falls under blue, and his animal-based powers and destiny within the Spider-Man universe fit into green.
"Spider-Man feeling obligated to use his power to help people is core to him being part of the white color pie. His origin, being bitten by a radioactive spider and his aptitude for science and invention, like his web-slingers, is very blue. Finally, Spider-Man's powers are based on an animal, and the comics have shown that there is a certain destiny to his connection to both spiders and the Spider-Man universe, which is all core green."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one [comic] run or series."
In addition to the Scene Box, the set will include the standard Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will see the return of Welcome Decks—introductory decks typically distributed for free by game stores to help new players ease into the game.
Beyond this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced an upcoming set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Before that, fans can look forward to two more in-universe sets with Tarkir: Dragonsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
