Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster's Development Took Longer Than Planned
The Developers Were Determined to Respect the Original Games

Creating Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster was a five-year effort, as the developers were dedicated to delivering a high-quality, faithful adaptation of the classic titles. In a March 4, 2025 interview with Dengeki Online, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster shared insights into the meticulous process of remastering the beloved games.
First announced in 2022 with an initial 2023 release window, the game was eventually delayed and is now scheduled to launch this year. Takahiro Sakiyama, IP and Game Director for the Suikoden Gensho series, explained that during the final stages of development, ongoing debugging revealed the need for additional review, leading to the decision to postpone.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi added, "We started by carefully assessing the situation. After discussing quality standards with Sakiyama, it became clear that numerous aspects required further attention, and we needed to address them thoroughly."
A New Beginning for the Series

The remaster represents more than a standalone release—it marks the first step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Series Producer Rui Naito shared the team's vision for the series and potential future projects.
Naito emphasized this to the production staff, stating, "The most crucial point was that this is the first step in bringing back the Suikoden IP. We had to ensure we got it right from the start. Our guiding principle was to 'make it solid.'" He continued, "For Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to 'create something robust.' Releasing an unfinished product at this pivotal moment would jeopardize the entire revival effort."
Gensou Suikoden Live Unveiled New Anime, Mobile Game, and Additional Projects

The Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, showcased several new Suikoden projects from Konami. Naito described the event as the second phase in the IP's revival, though he noted it's uncertain how many steps will be needed to fully restore the series.
He commented, "That's why we've been refining Suikoden I & II HD Remaster and maintaining a strong commitment to the upcoming mobile game Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime adaptation." Naito added, "Once we successfully deliver on these projects, we can begin planning what comes next."
Konami also announced Suikoden: The Anime, an adaptation based on the story and events of Suikoden 2. This will be the first production from Konami Animation. Additionally, a new mobile game titled "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP" is in development. Teaser trailers for both the anime and mobile game have been released, though official launch dates have yet to be confirmed.
More projects and events related to the Suikoden franchise are in the works as Konami strives to return the cherished series to the spotlight.
