NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled exciting new content with the first gameplay footage of the T-1000, a DLC guest character, and confirmed the addition of Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay showcases a variety of attacks that pay homage to the iconic Terminator 2 film, including the use of blade and hook arms reminiscent of characters Baraka and Kabal from the Mortal Kombat series. A standout moment in the teaser features the T-1000 transforming into a liquid metal blob before executing an uppercut similar to those used by Glacius in Killer Instinct.
The T-1000 is voiced by Robert Patrick, who portrayed the character in the 1991 film. The teaser includes a snippet of Patrick's voice acting during a confrontation with Johnny Cage, culminating in a Fatality that recreates the memorable truck chase scene from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 emerges from the vehicle to unleash a barrage of gunfire on Cage.
Simultaneously, NetherRealm announced that Madam Bo, a beloved character from the Mortal Kombat 1 storyline known for her role as a resilient restaurant owner, will join the game as a Kameo fighter alongside the T-1000. The teaser briefly showcases Madam Bo's gameplay, highlighting her assistance to the T-1000 during a match against Johnny Cage. The T-1000 will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 for early access to Khaos Reigns owners, with wider availability for purchase on March 25. Madam Bo will be accessible on March 18 as a free update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final DLC character in the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 follows other notable fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation continues among fans about the possibility of a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, influenced by ongoing discussions about Mortal Kombat 1's commercial performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav expressed plans to focus on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
Madam Bo is set to enhance the roster of Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo fighter. In September, Mortal Kombat development head Ed Boon affirmed that NetherRealm had chosen its next project three years ago but emphasized continued support for Mortal Kombat 1.
Many fans anticipate that NetherRealm's next project could be the third installment in the Injustice series, though no official confirmation has been made by NetherRealm or Warner Bros. The Injustice franchise began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. Despite initial expectations of alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice, NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon discussed the factors influencing the decision to focus on another Mortal Kombat game, mentioning the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Boon also expressed optimism about returning to the Injustice franchise in the future, stating, "Not at all," when asked if the door was closed on Injustice.
