There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

Author : Hannah Update:Mar 15,2025

George R.R. Martin recently shared exciting news on his blog, though not about the highly anticipated The Winds of Winter. Instead, he unveiled the cover for the illustrated edition of A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series to receive this special treatment. The artwork is by Jeffrey R. McDonald.

A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition is slated for release on November 4, 2025. Pre-orders are now open at major retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

This announcement is welcome news for collectors of the illustrated editions. The last one, A Storm of Swords, was released in November 2020, making it a five-year gap between illustrated releases. This edition will also feature a foreword by Joe Abercrombie. Martin promises a sneak peek at some interior illustrations later this spring.

What About The Winds of Winter?

For those eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter, the wait continues. Martin's last update, from December 2024, hinted at the possibility of never completing the book in his lifetime, despite having written 1,100 pages (as confirmed in November 2023). While disappointing, there remains a glimmer of hope for the series' completion, perhaps by another author. However, it seems likely that the first five illustrated editions will be released before The Winds of Winter sees the light of day.

Do you think George R.R. Martin will finish A Song of Ice and Fire?
