Laura Fryer, one of the original founders of Xbox, believes the company's hardware ambitions have reached a dead end.
In a new video reflecting on her experiences launching the original Xbox and Xbox 360, Fryer describes Microsoft's current strategy as "chaotic." She questions whether the highly-touted ROG Ally is a genuine contender and speculates on Xbox's future direction.
"There's absolutely no reason to purchase this handheld device," Fryer stated regarding the ROG Ally. "As a founding member of the Xbox team, I'm naturally disappointed with the current state of affairs. It's difficult to watch the value we worked so hard to build gradually diminish. From my perspective, it appears Xbox has either lost interest or simply can't continue producing hardware. This partnership feels like a gradual exit from the hardware business altogether. Personally, I believe Xbox hardware is finished."
Fryer noted that Xbox is now heavily focused on driving subscribers to Game Pass. While acknowledging the service's value—possibly explaining Outer Worlds 2's $80 price point—she expressed concerns about the company's long-term vision, particularly with Xbox's 25th anniversary approaching.
"The strategy might actually work," she conceded. "Xbox possesses an extensive catalog. The Oblivion Remaster proved tremendously successful, and they can continue outsourcing such projects to external developers, generating substantial revenue from re-releasing classic titles—games from an era when Xbox truly understood game development.
"But what about the long-term strategy? Where are the new blockbuster titles? What will make consumers care about Xbox twenty-five years from now?
"Next year marks Xbox's 25th anniversary, and I expect they'll have major announcements and celebrations planned. Perhaps next year will bring clarity. Maybe we'll all finally recognize the brilliance behind these recent decisions. I suppose only time will tell..."
Recent reports indicate Microsoft is preparing significant workforce reductions within its gaming division, potentially beginning this week. Management has reportedly been briefed about impending Xbox layoffs and broader company cuts, with sales teams expected to be particularly affected.
According to The Verge, Microsoft plans to implement these cuts before launching its next-generation consoles. This follows Microsoft's announcement of a partnership with AMD to power future Xbox hardware, including first-party consoles. The company has not yet revealed a timeline for these new devices.
