Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends
Xbox gamers rejoice! The much-requested friend request system, absent for a decade, is making a triumphant return to the platform. This announcement, shared via blog post and X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant shift from the previous "follow" system.
A Two-Way Street: Reclaiming Control
"We're thrilled to bring back friend requests," stated Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton. The new system establishes a two-way, invitation-based friendship, offering users greater control and clarity over their online connections. Friend requests will be managed via the console's People tab.
The Xbox One and Series X|S's "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control that friend requests provide. The ambiguity between friends and followers often led to confusion and an overwhelming number of passive connections.
The "follow" feature remains for one-way connections, enabling users to track content creators or communities without mutual approval. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing relationships.
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The updated system introduces enhanced privacy and notification settings, allowing users to manage friend requests, follower requests, and notifications directly within the Xbox settings menu.
A Wave of Positive Feedback
Social media erupted with positive responses, with users celebrating the return of a feature many didn't realize they missed. The previous system's lack of notification for followers was a frequent point of frustration.
While the friend request system caters to social gamers, it doesn't diminish the appeal of solo play. The option to connect with others complements the enjoyment of independent gaming.
While a precise release date is pending, the feature is currently in testing with Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. A full rollout is expected later this year.
